A-Rosa Cruises

A-Rosa Cruises is a German river cruise company that has been been in business for some time. In 2013 they have made 3 of their 10 ships available for the English speaking market (US, UK, Canada, and Australia). Itineraries are limited to the Rhine, Danube, and Rhone rivers. A-Rosa emphasizes the all inclusive nature of their cruises to differentiate them from their competitors. The list of things included in the base price are:

  • All gratuities
  • Open bar throughout the ship to include soft drinks, tea & coffee specialties, beer, wine, sparkling wine & Prosecco, cocktails and spirits
  • Complimentary bottled water in your stateroom
  • All port charges, taxes and fees
  • 3 complimentary excursions for most ports appealing to varying interests. Examples include Food & Wine, sports, culture, history and leisure activities
  • Open dining to enjoy a meal with whomever you wish with served dinner service
  • Outstanding cuisine using the freshest ingredients possible
  • European, English-speaking staff – professional, warm & friendly
  • Comfortable accommodations, most with French or full balconies
  • Modern ships complete with spa, sauna and gym, pools or whirlpools, putting green and a large covered area topside for your dining and sightseeing pleasures
  • Complimentary use of available bicycles onboard

They also quote prices including air and transfers but quotes are actually an approximation. Actual price must be calculated at the time of booking and may vary from the quote.

Ships - the three A-Rosa Cruises ships being marketed to the English speaking market are the Aqua, Silva, and Rosa. They are very close to identical - each accommodates between 186 and 210 passengers. Except for a few suites on each, all cabins are the same size - 156 sq ft. which is a little smaller than some (AMA at 172 sq ft and Avalon at 200) but they are well laid out and seem comfortable.

Life on board - the ships do have a spa, a pool,  and an exercise facility. They pride themselves on gourmet meals using the freshest ingredients from the regions through which you are sailing. Where most companies include a shore excursion in each port, A-Rosa offers a choice of 3 included excursions in most ports. Many of the excursions are themed - active, food and wine, and cultural.

Itineraries - since this is the inaugural season for A-Rosa, they are limiting the number of itineraries to a few on the Rhine,Rhone, and the Danube. The itineraries are very similar to others on these rivers.

Cost - considering all of the standard inclusions, A-Rosa prices are comparatively reasonable. The price difference between the standard window cabin and the best French balcony is only $500 per person. Prices average about $470 per person per night for the French balcony cabin. It is possible that current prices are being influenced by desire to have the inaugural season go well and might go up in a few years.
